Why do white people want to know your heritage?
Why are white people so fascinated by the heritage of non-white people they meet? Why does it matter?
It is starting to seem like a leftover of imperialist racism, that need to be taught to scientifically categorize other people so expertly so that next time, you can tell the person’s heritage at a glance, and know how to prejudge them from a distance of several hundred yards.
How is this useful to know? Why is the topic interesting to white people? Do non - white people ask this as well?
And as an aside, I used to do this, before I began learning about social justice. I feel deeply embarrassed about that but I would have loved to have been taught that it was rude, earlier, maybe in childhood when you learn other manners.
I don’t know. I’ve noticed in my personal experience there is also a fascination to know heritages of white people. (“Where in Europe does your family line come from?”) I never do know how to respond to that - I used to just say ‘Africa’ because I was taught in middle school that Africa was the birthplace of humanity, but now I get the feeling I’d been violating numerous social rules by saying that. Now I just flail around uneasily, mumbling, ‘why does it matter?’ and feeling terrible the entire time - I say it doesn’t matter across the board, no matter what someone’s heritage is, but in saying that I am truly displaying naïveté.
No seriously, there is nothing wrong with just being a white person. To think such would be stupid because you’d be discrediting the individual.
But don’t think that you can just sit back in your little white privilege bubble and uphold said privilege over others. What’s wrong here is the adherence to white superiority, supremacy, and ignorance.
Also keep in mind that your feelings being hurt because someone said they “hate white people” is nowhere near the same as racism.
You have the privilege of just being able to shrug that off.

I just came across this video from our local Fox News station and it’s really frustrating. The editor in chief of Philadelphia Magazine admits to not having any black people on its editorial staff (keep in mind that Philadelphia is nearly 50% black) yet he’s arguing that it’s hard for white people because they can’t say anything without being labeled a racist. Maybe you are the fuck racist. I can’t with Philadelphians today.

I understand the daily hardships that so many people have in a world ruled by white males.
I understand that sometimes this can make it feel as if all white males are the enemy (especially for those who fight for equality).
but posts like this need to stop.

I’ve lost track, am I even allowed an opinion these days? Whatever. How about this radical idea: Let’s treat each other equally, and then we’ll all be equal? All this mindless mud-slinging achieves nothing and only serves to demonstrate how true objectives of those involved (notably NOT equality).
